The sequence of photographs below charts the evolution of dye over a 10-minute period in our thermohaline experiment. Water dyed red can be seen entering the shallow end (poleward flank) of the tank in the top right-hand corner, flowing westwards, then equatorwards in a western boundary current and finally turning eastwards on encountering the wall at the deep end of the tank (representing the southern flank).
The rotation rate of the turntable was Ω = 10rpm and the inflow rate of the dyed fluid was 100 ml/minute.
