Low Pressure
When we slow the rotation rate of the tank, we form low pressure at the center. You will see the surface particles move in the same direction as the tank’s rotation in circles around the low pressure. This is analogous to isobaric flow in the free atmosphere. The permanganate at the bottom experiences friction from the tank and moves cross-isobaric toward the center. This is analogous to atmospheric behavior near the surface. Click here to see a movie.

High Pressure
When we then increase the rotation rate of the tank, we form high pressure at the center. You will see the surface particles change direction, but still move isobaric. The permanganate at the bottom moves cross-isobaric toward the edges. Click here to see a movie.
