The photographs below chart the evolution of paper dots floating on the surface of the water ‘upstream’ of the puck on the bottom. The rotation rate of the table is 5rpm. After the rotation rate of the turntable is reduced (very slightly) by 0.1 rpm or so, the particles drift towards the obstacle but, rather than flowing over it, are diverted around it in a vertically coherent way as if the obstacle extended all the way through the water. In this way we create a stagnant “Taylor column” above the obstacle.
